If you're on the hunt for a delicious brunch or quick dessert that strikes the perfect balance between indulgence and simplicity, these irresistible little baklava rolls have you covered.
Ingredients
Puff pastry serves as a deliciously flaky and convenient alternative to phyllo dough in these baklava rolls. Cinnamon adds depth, brown sugar adds a touch of caramelly goodness, and chopped walnuts give these rolls a perfectly rich and crunchy finish.
- puff pastry
- butter
- cinnamon
- brown sugar
- chopped walnuts
- egg
- water
- granulated sugar
- honey
- orange extract
Feel free to go half and half with pistachios for a more traditional baklava flavor! I had walnuts on hand, but these rolls are amazing with pecans, pistachios and hazelnuts.
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (190°C). Line a mini muffin tin with liners or lightly coat with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside.
- In a small bowl, combine the melted butter, cinnamon, and brown sugar. Set aside.
3. On a lightly floured work surface, roll out the puff pastry and evenly spread the butter-cinnamon mixture overtop, leaving about a ½-inch border along the edges.
4. Evenly sprinkle out the walnuts and/or pistachios over the cinnamon-sugar layer.
5. Carefully roll up the puff pastry, pressing gently to seal the edge. Using a sharp knife, cut the roll into 1-inch thick slices.
6. Place each slice into one of the prepared muffin cups. Brush the tops of the rolls with the beaten egg to create a glossy finish.
- While the rolls are baking, prepare the syrup. In a small saucepan, combine the orange extract or triple sec, honey or maple syrup, water, sugar, and cloves (if using). Bring the mixture to a light boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 5-7 minutes, until slightly thickened.
- Remove the baked rolls from the oven and allow them to cool for 5 minutes. Drizzle the syrup evenly over the rolls while they're still warm and allow it to seep into the rolls. Enjoy your delicious Puff Pastry Baklava Rolls!
Kitchen Tip: Make sure your puff pastry is properly thawed but still chilled before working with it. Puff pastry can become super sticky and difficult to handle if it's too warm, and it can also lead to a less flaky and tender final baked good.
Substitutions
- Nuts - Instead of walnuts, try other nuts like pistachios, almonds, hazelnuts, or pecans. Try combining multiple kinds to create a totally unique flavor!
- Spices - If you'd like to experiment with different spices, try adding ground cardamom, nutmeg, or cloves to the filling mixture for a deeper, more complex flavor.
- Sweetener - You can replace the brown sugar with granulated sugar or coconut sugar in the filling mixture. For the syrup, feel free to substitute honey with agave syrup, maple syrup, or a mixture of the two.
Storage
Because this recipe uses puff pastry, it's definitely best enjoyed fresh. Puff pastry tends to lose a lot of its wonderful texture as it sits. If you are storing leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days.
